[tag]Silicon Graphics Inc. [/tag]announced on Monday that it has filed for [tag]Chapter 11[/tag] [tag]bankruptcy protection[/tag] as it seeks to reorganize and re-emerge from its financial woes.

なんと…。一昔前までCGと言えばここのwork station(という言葉も懐かしい…)を使って作られているといったイメージがありましたが、しばらく名前を聞かないうちに破産ですかぁ。

Jim Clarkが軍役を経たのちに大学で研究していた成果を花開かせたのがSGI。ところが外から呼んできたCFOだったかに追い出されて、その時にMosaicに注目、Marc Andreesenを引っ張ってきて作ったのがNet scapeだったんだよね。[tag]Liar’s Porker[/tag]の[tag]Michael Lewis[/tag]がJim Clarkを取材した本[tag]The New New Thing[/tag] : A Silicon Valley Story には、まだ立ち上がったばかりのGoogleとかいう新興のサーチ･エンジンの会社に彼が投資したという話がちらりとだけ描かれていた。そのGoogleの本社がSGIの昔の社屋というのは知ってる人なら知ってる話。
時代は目まぐるしく動くものです。
これ欲しかったなぁ、使えもしないのに…。
