Google…innovative?!? Come on!

「Googleが革新的だって? 冗談だろ?」なんていうタイトルの刺激的な記事。

1. Search. It wasn’t the first, but it’s clearly the best. A+
2. Orkut (Social Networking) – F (Was there every any need for this? Did anyone ever use it?)
3. Picasa (Photo sharing) – D (Acquired, not developed in-house. Tired retread of Flickr, which is better)
4. Froogle (Comparison shopping) – F- (Possibly the best idea and worst delivery of anything new Google has done. But it stinks)
5. Spreadsheets (Um, spreadsheet) – D (Didn’t Microsoft do this much better decades ago? So now it’s on the web…who cares? It’s not nearly as good as Excel. Certainly nothing innovative about it.)
6. Calendar (PIM) – C (A decent product, but not innovative)
7. Google Earth – A (Not very useful, but very cool. For about 20 minutes, and then it’s time to get back to work and the real world again)
8. Google Maps – A- (Pretty cool. Moderately innovative in the ability to scroll maps. But that’s really the only innovation.)
9. Google Mobile (Text) – C (I love texting Google for answers, but it’s hardly innovative. Others have been doing a better job of it for years.)
10. Google Hubris – A++

「1.検索 – A+ ……最初に始めたわけではないが間違いなくこの分野ではベスト。
2.Orkut – F ……ニーズあるの? 誰か使ってた人いる?
3.Picasa – D ……買収した技術であって、自分たちで開発したものではない。Flickrの焼きなおしだし、そっちの方がいい。
4.Froogle – F ……アイデアは良いが実装はお粗末。但し可能性は捨てきれないかも。
5.Spreadsheet – D ……数十年前にMicrosoftが成功させたものをWebに持ってきただけだけど…それが何だって言うの? Excelに勝っている部分もないし、全く’innovative’ではない。
6.calendar – C ……まっとうな代物ではあるが、これも’innovative’とは言えない。
7.Google Earth – A ……実用的ではないがCoolだ。20分くらいは遊べんだら、さっさと仕事に戻ろう。
8.Google Maps – A- ……極めてCool。地図をスクロールして見せたのはそこそこ’innovative’だ。が、その点だけだね。
9.Google Mobile(Text) – C ……私はこれが大好きだが、残念ながら’innovative’ではない。何年も前から同じことをよりうまくやっている人達はいる。
10.Google Hubris – A++ ……彼らの傲慢さはピカ一だ。」

てな感じでバッサリな訳ですが、まぁ、これだけGoogle礼賛の記事や本が世の中に出回れば、反対のことを言いたくなる人も出てくるのかな、と。
但し評価できる点はちゃんと評価しています。

Don’t get me wrong. I think Google is a great company for what it does well: search.
Yes, Google search is awesome.
Google’s primary innovation is its original insight that ads marry well with searches. Its search is great,

多分この人は「Google Lover」の盲目的な態度が気に入らないのでしょう。何かを過信して自分で考えることを止めちゃったら、新興宗教にハマっているのと変わりませんからね。
